National Leagues Return: England, Spain, and France Kick Off the 2025–26 Season

The English Premier League returns on Friday, August 15, 2025, with an emotional opening clash as reigning champions Liverpool host Bournemouth at Anfield at 3:00 p.m. ET. The match will carry special significance as Liverpool pay tribute to the late Diogo Jota, adding a poignant layer to the season opener. Meanwhile, in Spain, LaLiga EA Sports begins the same day with two fixtures to set the tone for the campaign: Girona vs. Rayo Vallecano at 1:00 p.m. ET, followed by Villarreal vs. Real Oviedo at 3:30 p.m. ET. The opening round will then continue across the weekend and into Tuesday, August 19, bringing fans back into stadiums after a long summer break.

In France, the country’s top flight, Ligue 1 McDonald’s, is also scheduled to begin this weekend, running from August 15–17. However, no matches are set for Friday itself, as the official first-round fixtures will take place on Saturday and Sunday. Paris Saint-Germain, the perennial title favorites, will start their campaign slightly later, facing FC Nantes early next week. The return of all three major leagues promises a packed calendar, renewed rivalries, and plenty of storylines as the 2025–26 season gets underway.
