MLB Week in Review: Brewers Stay Hot, Mets Struggle as Playoff Races Tighten

The week of August 4–10, 2025, brought plenty of drama in Major League Baseball. The Milwaukee Brewers were the hottest team in the league, extending their winning streak to nine games with a walk-off home run by Isaac Collins against Edwin Díaz on Sunday. The sweep over the New York Mets kept Milwaukee firmly at the top of the National League Central and strengthened their status as a playoff favorite.
For the Mets, it was a week to forget. Managed by Carlos Mendoza, they lost seven straight games and 11 of their last 12, falling 5.5 games behind the Phillies in the NL East. They still hold the last Wild Card spot, but only 1.5 games ahead of the Reds. Even Pete Alonso’s historic moment — tying the franchise home run record with his 252nd blast — couldn’t hide the frustration caused by defensive mistakes and bullpen struggles.
The standings show the Brewers on top of the NL Central with a 73-44 record, followed by the Cubs and Reds. In the NL West, the Dodgers lead at 68-50, and in the East, the Phillies are ahead with 68-49. Over in the American League, the Blue Jays lead the East at 69-50, the Astros and Mariners are tied in the West with 66 wins each, and the Tigers control the Central with 68-51. The Wild Card races in both leagues are extremely tight, with several teams separated by just a couple of games.
The week also brought some big personal milestones. José Altuve hit his 250th career home run, joining José Ramírez as the only active players with at least 250 homers and 250 stolen bases. Justin Verlander reached 3,500 career strikeouts, becoming the 10th pitcher in MLB history to do so. While his season with the Giants has been tough, these achievements are proof that baseball’s veteran stars continue to make history.
With just over 40 games left in the regular season, the playoff push is heating up. The Brewers and Dodgers look like postseason locks, but teams like the Mets, Padres, Red Sox, and Yankees are fighting to hold their spots. At this stage, a hot streak could launch a team into October glory, while a cold streak could end their season. One thing is certain — as October gets closer, the stakes and excitement in every game will only grow.
