Atlanta Braves and The Battery: A Business Model Success

The Atlanta Braves have transformed their management model, becoming a benchmark in the sports industry. Through an innovative corporate structure, they have successfully integrated professional baseball with real estate development, creating a synergy that boosts both team performance and overall profitability.

The team is owned by Atlanta Braves Holdings, Inc., a publicly traded company that allows fans to invest in the club. This public ownership model is unique in Major League Baseball, offering transparency and a closer connection with supporters. The company reported $47.2 million in revenue in Q1 2025, with an even split between baseball operations and real estate development.

At the core of this model is The Battery Atlanta, a mixed-use real estate development surrounding Truist Park. With a $1.1 billion investment, The Battery includes offices, residences, retail, restaurants, and a hotel, attracting over 9 million visitors annually—three times the average attendance at Braves games.

This approach allows the Braves to generate substantial revenue outside MLB’s revenue-sharing constraints, as income from The Battery is not considered baseball revenue. In 2024, total team revenue reached $663 million, a sharp increase from $264 million in 2016.

The Braves’ strategy has been recognized as a model for the sports industry. Despite mixed on-field results, their business success has set a new standard for integrating sports facilities with urban development, proving that a visionary approach can transform both the sport and the surrounding community.
