Regular Season Ends, 2025 MLB Playoffs Take Shape

The 2025 Major League Baseball regular season has wrapped up, setting the stage for October’s postseason. Under the current 12-team format, six clubs from each league qualify — the three division winners plus three wild card teams.

Matchups as the Postseason Begins

In the American League:

The top two division winners (No. 1 and No. 2 seeds) receive byes into the Division Series.

The Wild Card round will pair:

(3) Cleveland Guardians vs. (6) Detroit Tigers

(4) New York Yankees vs. (5) Boston Red Sox

The winners then face the top two seeds: Blue Jays and Mariners.

In the National League:

The top two division winners (No. 1 and No. 2) also get byes.

Wild Card matchups feature:

(3) Los Angeles Dodgers vs. (6) New York Mets

(4) Chicago Cubs vs. (5) San Diego Padres

Winners move on to face the top-seeded Brewers and Phillies.

Each Wild Card series is best-of-3 (all games hosted by the higher seed).
